TOM SONG-THRUSH AND THE BIG HUSH

Barry J Tindall

Tom Song-Thrush and the Big Hush” is an uplifting, funny and heart warming tale about friendship, loyalty, determination, camaraderie, love and … conservation, told through the eyes of the main character. Tom Song-Thrush is a young bird and expert singer but he is somewhat uphappy. He has grown up listening to his dad's tales of unfeathered (humans) interference with the environment and the decline of his, and many other bird species.

He cares deeply about this, wants to stop it and is moved to act. Tom and his mates Darcy Dunnock, Bill Blackbird, Rosie Robin and Jennifer Wrennifer come up with an ingenious plan that might just work …. It requires patience, tenacity, teamwork, discipline and a healthy dollop of luck!

How I got to write this book

Well ….

As a child growing up in the countryside I spent most of my time, when not at school, wandering the local hills and fields. I developed a passion for birds and was never happier than being outside watching and listening to them.
As I grew older I became distracted and there wasn’t time in my busy life for my favourite thing, until …. A lot of years later!
I moved back to the house I grew up in and immediately set about reconnecting with my younger days and my birds.
It was springtime and they were in full voice. It was fabulous and I became entranced with the multitude of chirps, twitters, coos, tweets, warbles and whistles. It was like they were talking to me.
However, I was also upset that many of the species I knew and loved as a child had disappeared or at least dwindled in numbers.
Species like Lapwing, House Martin, Pied Wagtail, Grey Partridge, Spotted Flycatcher, Cirl Bunting, Song Thrush, Starling, Dunnock and others …
all had gone completely or were seriously avoiding me. That’s far too many!
We have caused this decline by interfering with their habitat and changing our farming methods.
Anyway, the more I listened the more I became convinced the birds were trying to tell me something.
There was one particular Song Thrush who used to sing his heart out morning, noon and night.
It is a beautiful song and in my mind he was saying ..
 “We need help!”
I called him Tom and wrote this book about how he and his friends tackle the conservation problems they are facing.

I hope you enjoy it!

Great childrens book

Great bird characters and a story that will get children more interested in the world of birds and the way we treat our world. A first book from a new author with a deep interest in birdlife, I'm sure there will be more.

A great wildlife bird book

This is a great introduction for children of the different bird species in a typical English village. Well done!

Tom Song-Thrush - can he save the hedges and verges?

This charming book sets out a good case for conservation and for retaining hedge rows and flowering grass verges. It is a joy to read - I shared it with my grandchildren.
The birds of Elmdown Wood and Little Snuffling are shocked to discover the humans (the unfeathered) plan to cut down hedges and mow grass verges. Tom comes up with a plan to try to stop them. It's "Silent Spring" time with a vengeance!
I'm happy to say that local councils in Berkshire and Oxfordshire seem to have seen the sense of leaving verges uncut - or are they just saving money?

Engaging and Important

This is an intelligent and engaging story. Great book to read with children and grandchildren and full of hooks to engage them in thinking about how much we affect birds’ environment, sometimes for good, more often, sadly, for ill.
Good characters and scope for further story lines and development

Great to read out loud

Tom Song-Thrush conveys a really important environmental message in an easy-to-read format – not only for the self-reader but it’s great to read out loud. Particularly recommended for grandparents wanting to share some special times with the grandchildren. The illustrations are engaging too.

Tom Song Thrush - a great debut

This book has some lovely references to the countryside and the bird life characters that live there. It is a gentle fictional story but also references some serious and important subjects. Looking forward to reading more from Barry Tindall.

Story with an important message

This is an ideal book to read to an older child. It can lead to conservation discussion and enquiry about bird identification and habitat.
